Want to know how some of the 20th century’s most celebrated artists made abstract paintings? This course offers a hands-on look at the materials, techniques, and thinking of eight New York School artists, including Willem de Kooning, Yayoi Kusama, Agnes Martin, Ad Reinhardt, Robert Motherwell, Clyfford Still, Cy Twombly, and Robert Rauschenberg.

Through studio demonstrations of techniques and video walkthroughs, you’ll form a deeper understanding of the sensitivity to design, composition and quality of paint. This course will round out your understanding, providing broader cultural, intellectual, and historical context about the decades after World War II, when these artists were active.

The works of art you will explore in this course will serve as points of departure to make your own abstract paintings.

My work expresses my love of nature and my observations of flowers and fauna. I use the abstract language of bold color, varying textures, shapes, and pattern to interpret the geometric and organic forms. I take a tiny sliver of an element that inspires me and magnify it to highlight, and show off its complexities, intricate layers, patterns and design.
